Abrasive Wheels

The mounting and dressing of abrasive wheels is restricted to personnel who have:

• Been trained in accordance with Regulation 9 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

• Been appointed to do so and their names have been entered on the register of competence. 


The use of grinding machines is restricted to those personnel who have received training in the safe use of such machines.


Employees duties:

Do not mount or dress an abrasive wheel unless you are trained to do so and you have been appointed by your manager.

Do not use a grinder unless you are trained in its use

Do follow the requirements of the appropriate Risk Assessment for a safe method of work.


Managers duties:

Ensure that training is provided for those staff that is required to mount or dress an abrasive wheel. A half day abrasive wheels training course is appropriate.

Keep a register of those staff appointed to mount or dress abrasive wheels.

Ensure that users of grinding machines are trained in their safe use.

Ensure that grinding machines are maintained in a safe condition in terms of electrical safety and mechanical safety (guards are in place no excessive vibration or noise, etc).

Periodically check that grinders are being used safely.

Ensure that the requirements of the Risk Assessment are observed.
